June to August & December to February: Prime Time for Gorilla Trekking

These are Uganda’s dry seasons, and the most popular times to visit. Trails are firm, skies are clear, and trekking through the dense forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park becomes more manageable and rewarding.

These months offer the highest chances of encountering mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, and other primates in their natural habitat. It’s also the best time for birdwatching, with over 1,000 species flitting through Uganda’s vibrant ecosystems.

Whether you're gazing into the eyes of a silverback gorilla or listening to the haunting call of the African grey parrot, this is a time when Uganda feels wide open—and deeply alive.

March to May: The Green Season with Fewer Crowds

Uganda’s long rains bring lushness and life. Waterfalls roar, forests glisten, and the air feels freshly painted. While some trails can become muddy, this is still a worthy time for adventure travelers and photographers who seek rich color, dramatic skies, and fewer tourists on the paths. Accommodation rates are often lower during this season, making it an ideal time for those looking to experience Uganda more intimately and affordably.

September to November: Quiet Beauty and Unique Encounters

This is Uganda’s shoulder season—less crowded than the peak months but often surprisingly pleasant. The rains are lighter and usually fall in short bursts, leaving plenty of sunshine in between. For cultural travelers and wildlife enthusiasts, this period offers a peaceful atmosphere for exploring Uganda’s hidden gems—from the plains of Queen Elizabeth National Park to the tranquil waters of Lake Bunyonyi.

Seasonal Highlights by Region

  • Bwindi & Mgahinga (Gorilla Trekking): Best from June to August and December to February
  • Queen Elizabeth & Murchison Falls (Wildlife Viewing): Great year-round, but clearer sightings in dry months
  • Kibale Forest (Chimpanzee Tracking): Best in dry seasons, but open year-round
  • Lake Bunyonyi & Sipi Falls: Most beautiful post-rain, from September to November
